Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent remote that's very customizable Comment: After spending considerable time researching true universal remote controls I chose the MX-800 which was a great choice for a home theater. The PC-connectivity (works great with Virtual PC or Boot Camp for OS X with a serial/USB adapter) for programming the remote, the ability to rename the LCD buttons, move programmed buttons around, sophisticated macro abilities and the MX-800's excellent learning from other remotes abilities set it apart from other universal remotes. This is the one to get if you want great performance and a reasonable price. Price is relative, of course, but the MX-800 is comparable with the high-end home theater remote systems, not your $50 "universal remote" money-wasters that never really work "universally". Real universal remotes like the MX-800 really do work with any device. Don't be fooled into buying battery-eating touch-screen remotes; you want the ability to flip through channels and other settings by touch, not by looking at a touch-screen whenever you want the volume up or change channels. The approach of the Home Theater Master remotes is ease of use through the buttons (all of which are programmable) and they've designed an LCD display that makes sense for real day-to-day use instead of a screen with impressive-looking but useless graphics to impress your guests. You'll be happier in the long run with a remote that is easy to use and does the job superbly than you will be that one time wow-ing your Uncle Billy with the big remote that's hard to use. Universal Remote Control has removed the software needed to use the remote from the box. They have also removed the software from their web site. URC has said that only customers who purchase at list price from an authorized dealer will be given access to the software. Without this software, the customer has no way to update their remote or program it.

This is a nice remote, but if you want it, make sure you purchase from an authorized dealer that can give you access to the software needed to program it. A list of authorized Internet dealers is below -- you must purchase from one of these dealers to get a functional MX-700:

The pluses:
1) I previously had a Phillips Pronto, and this device is much easier to program.
2) I think that the configurable buttons + hard buttons combination of the MX-800 is much more practical than the touch screen configurable layout of the Pronto.
3) The RF support is great! It's very convenient to not have to point the remote at my home theater equipment to get the buttons to respond correctly (like you would with IR connections).
4) If you use a laptop to run the MX-800's software (or have a desktop in the same room as your home theater system), you can test the buttons while you are configuring the MX-800.
5) If you take the time to read the tutorial, you will find that you can create a logical and "easy to use" remote that others can easily learn how to use. (Important for those of us with spouses!)
6) Universal has a database of preprogrammed home theater devices that you can download. If your receiver, tv, dvd player, etc. is listed in this database, it is very easy to add your device to the remote. If your device is not in the database, the "learning mode" for the buttons on the remote is pretty straightforward.
The minuses:
1) There are not enough pre-programmed devices in Universal's database - although this situation is getting better.
2) You will need a PC to program the remote. And if you don't have a laptop, you will be making many trips between your PC and your home theater system (unless your PC is in the same room as your home theater system).
3) The Enter button on the scroll wheel is kind of finicky - sometimes I get Scroll Up or Scroll Down when I am trying to press Enter on the wheel. There is a newer model, the MX-850, that corrects this issue - although I think that this model costs around a $100 more.
Finally, I got a great price from NYC Electronics for the MX-800. With shipping (no tax), I paid $245.55 for the remote. If you have a high end or mid range home theater system, then I highly recommend that you consider this remote!
